Although I have touched on this subject before, I am currently working on a presentation on the psychology of color and how it affects design. It would be a good thing to brush up on because of how important color is. Color and the emotions it gives off are vital aspects to understand to elevate your designs. Each color tends to have a feeling attached to it. For example, red is often associated with hunger and lust. While the general population understands the emotions associated with most colors, there are differences from culture to culture. For instance, in the Western culture, black is often associated with death. However, in Hindu, it is white that is associated with death. Not only does each color represent a different emotion, but the spectrum within that color also often assigns different emotions. For example, yellow encourages clear thinking and memory retention. Now, make that a bright yellow, and suddenly, the meaning of the color changes. Bright yellow often evokes the feeling of anxiety. However, a darker yellow brings out the emotion and perception of wealth. Color psychology is fascinating and something that every designer should take the time to understand.
